), was created in May 1950.

The flag has 14
horizontal
stripes alternating
red
and
white
; in the
canton
, a
yellow
crescent
and 14-point
star
on a
blue
field. In 1997, Malaysians were asked to name the flag, and Prime Minister
Mahathir Mohamad
chose the name
Jalur Gemilang
to symbolize the country's progress and success.
