Data from clinical, twin and adoption studies suggest that genetic factors may play a role as
a distal risk factor in suicidal behaviour. The serotonin transporter gene, as a model for
studies examining interaction between genes and environment, is discussed. Studies that
report interaction between the serotonin transporter and stressful life events, in relation to
the development of depression in both adults and adolescents and in relationship to suicidal
behaviour, are reviewed. Relevant interaction studies in primates are also discussed.
