Istoria declinului ?i a pr?bu?irii Imperiului Roman (in englez? The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire ) este o lucrare in ?ase volume a istoricului englez Edward Gibbon . Acesta urm?re?te civiliza?ia occidental? (precum ?i cuceririle islamice ?i mongole) de la apari?ia Imperiului Roman pan? la c?derea Imperiului Bizantin in secolul al XV-lea. Volumul I a fost publicat in 1776 ?i a trecut prin ?ase tip?riri. ^[2] Volumele II ?i III au fost publicate in 1781; ^[3]^[4] volumele IV, V ?i VI in 1788?1789. ^[5]^[6]^[7]^[8]

Cele ?ase volume acoper? istoria, din 98 pan? in 1590 , a Imperiului Roman, istoria cre?tinismului timpuriu ?i apoi a Bisericii de stat romane ?i istoria Europei ?i analizeaz? declinul Imperiului Roman , printre altele.

Autorul sus?ine teoria declinului ?i c?derii Imperiului Roman potrivit c?reia acestea s-ar fi datorat:

sl?birii structurii imperiului, la care ar fi contribuit ?i cre?tinismul
presiunea din afar?, cauzat? de popoarele barbare, care erau du?manii imperiului,

El exclude teoria lui Montesquieu , care atribuia cauza c?derii imperiului decaden?ei societ??ii romane.
