In timpul celui de- al doilea r?zboi mondial , a condus Divizia Teoretic? a laboratorului secret Los Alamos contribuind la dezvoltarea primelor bombe atomice . Acolo, a jucat un rol-cheie la calcularea masei critice a bombelor, ?i a lucrat ?i la elaborarea teoriei metodei cu implozie folosit? atat in Testul Trinity cat ?i in bomba " Fat Man " folosit? la Nagasaki .

In anii 1950, Bethe a jucat un rol important in dezvoltarea bombei cu hidrogen , de?i se angajase in proiect in speran?a de a demonstra c? nu este fezabil. Bethe a militat ulterior impreun? cu Albert Einstein in Comitetul de Urgen?? al Oamenilor de ?tiin?? din Domeniul Atomic impotriva testelor nucleare ?i impotriva cursei de inarmare nuclear?. A influen?at Casa Alb? s? semneze actul de interzicere a testelor nucleare in atmosfer? in 1963 ?i Tratatul anti-rachete balistice ( SALT I ) in 1972 .
