Double Down Live 1980/2008 | ZZ Top

This double disc-set of ZZ Top
concerts, from 1980 and 2008,
is interesting in that it barely
includes any material from the
band’s most successful 80s
albums, Eliminator and
Afterburner. This means no Legs,
Sharp Dressed Man or Gimme
All Your Lovin’. Nevertheless, the
set is a real treat for fans,
including all-time favourites such
as Tush and Waitin’ For The Bus
in their modern and harder-rocking
late 70s guises.

The earlier concert, filmed
for Germany’s Rockpalast show,
is the better of the two, the no-frills
camerawork and lack of
backstage footage putting the
focus firmly on the trio’s
powerful, hard-edged
performance. The satisfyingly
raw and ragged set really
highlights just how great both
Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill’s
vocals and musicianship are.

The 2008 footage was
filmed during the band’s world
tour of that year and suffers
from too many montages of
plane flights/backstage antics
and so forth being shown over
the soundtrack. Unsurprisingly,
the band seems a little more
effortful than in days of yore but
still prove that they can rock with
the best of them.

Seeker’s Guide To The Rhythm Of Yesteryear

Gallimaufry is a word which means a mixed-up hodge-podge, but it is exactly the right, unusual word for an unusual book. Shiloh Noone is an “alternative” radio DJ, occultist and “Zionist Christian” now based in South Africa, and if that sounds like weird mixture, so is his book. It’s a sprawling celebration of music fr…

Fight (Live)

Though later hailed as one of Nirvana’s major influences, San Francisco sludgecore pioneers Flipper never fully recovered from core member Will Shatter’s death from a drug overdose late in 1987. After an occasionally inspired, but poorly-received collaboration with Def Jam’s Rick Rubin for 1992’s American Grafishy and anothe…

Live On WLIR

Released back in 1992 on Rykodisc, Live was more than just another live album. It was the place all newbie Big Star fans ended up, fresh from inhaling the infamous Big Beat twofer CD, usually after a Teenage Fanclub namedrop or three. True, 1992 also saw Ryko reissue Sister Lovers and Chris Bell’s I Am The Cosmos but those were more challenging a…

Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club

With the passing of Orlando
Cachaito Lopez, this latest visit
was a tribute to the fourth core
member of Buena Vista. Still
counting BVSC old-timers Guajiro
Mirabal, Barbarito Torres, Manuel
Galban and Aguaje Ramos among
them, Orquesta BVSC features
the outstanding Rolando Luna on
piano, and vocalists Idania Valdes
and Carlos Calu…
