Os Beta Israel viviam no norte e noroeste da Etiopia, em mais de 500 aldeias espalhadas por um vasto territorio, entre as populacoes que eram predominantemente muculmana e crista.

A maioria delas estavam concentradas na area em torno do
Lago Tana
e ao norte dele, na Regiao Tigre; entre os Wolqayit, Shire e Tselemt e Amhara Region Gonder das regioes; entre a Provincia Semien, Dembia, Segelt, Quara, e Belesa.
Os Beta Israel fizeram contato com outras comunidades judaicas no final do seculo XX. Depois do
