John Russell , 1. jarl Russell, (født 18. august 1792 , død 28. mai 1878 ) var en britisk whigpolitiker og senere liberal . Han var fra 1835 innenriksminister og leder av Underhuset i kabinettet til Lord Melbourne , noe han var frem til 1841. Han var statsminister fra 1846 til 1852 og fra 1865 til 1866. ^[11]^[12]

Han slet sterkt med a handtere hungersnøden i Irland , og det er sagt at i hans tid som statsminister i sin første periode ødela whig-partiet (han var siste statsminister fra Whig), og at hans andre periode nesten ødela det liberale partiet. ^[13]

Han holdt i 1814 en tale til støtte for Norge og deres ønske om uavhengighet.
