indonesiske
øyene
Java
i sør,
Borneo
i nord,
Sumatra
i vest og
Sulawesi
i øst.

Javasjøen har en gjennomsnittlig dybde pa 40-50 meter

(maksimalt 67 m., skjønt med en maksimal omradedefinisjon er det større dybder i øst, pa inntil 200 m) og omfatter et omrade pa fra 367.000 til 433.000
km²
, alt etter hvordan det avgrenses i vest og i øst

Mange øyer og øygrupper ligger i dette havavsnittet, som
Bawean
,
Karimunjawa-øyene
eller
Kepulauan Seribu
. Særlig viktige havner inntil havet er
Tanjung Priok
(Indonesias største, nær
Jakarta
),
Cirebon
,
Semarang
,
Surabaya
(alle pa Java) og
Banjarmasin
(pa Borneo).
I nordvest forbinder
Karimatastredet
Javasjøen med
Sørkinahavet
.
Sundastredet
i sørvest fører til
Indiahavet
. I nordøst fører
Makassarstredet
til
Celebessjøen
. I Øst ligger
Floressjøen
.
Javasjøen oppstod mot slutten av den siste
istid
, da havoverflaten steg og
Sundalandet
ble oversvømmet

. Med Sundalandet menes en tidligere sammenhengende landmasse fra Bakindia (dagens
Malaysia
-
Thailand
-
Vietnam
) og ned til og med Java og Borneo.
I dette tropiske havet bestemmes havstrømmene av
monsunens
vinder

. Om sommeren presser vestmonsunen vannet inn fra Sørkinahavet, gjennom Karimatastredet, inn i Javasjøen; østmonsun fører vann tilbake fra Floressjøen.
Her finnes over 3000 forskjellige fiskeslag, og fiskeri er en viktig næringsvei. Omradet er ogsa populært for
apparatdykking
grunnet sin maritime undervannsverden med
koraller
og
svamper
.
Forurensning og bruk av drivnett utgjør et problem for dyr- og planteliv. Dessuten pavirker de stigende gjennomsnitts vanntemperaturer artsmangfoldet. Mange rev blir endret ved
korallbleking
til de reneste undervannsrøyser, noe som gar ut over bade turisme og fiskeri.
Under
andre verdenskrig
ble et stort sjøslag,
slaget i Javasjøen
, utkjempet i Javasjøen fra februar til mars 1942. Slaget førte til store tap for
Australia
,
Nederland
,
Storbritannia
og
USA
, som prøvde a forsvare øya Java fra
japanske
angrep.
