Wiki Farm for MediaWiki

My problems are that my web host restricts MySQL so the users scrip can not grant the permissions. I also have problems which appear to be caused by my inability to log on as root. Finally, and most of all, I am quite ignorant about Linux, MySQL, PHP, etc. Therefore I bought a computer so I can experiment and educate myself on Linux, etc. Once I am halfway competent, I will look for a host. My local wikipedia, using wikimedia software is up and running. I was very excited to see that! Now, I shall study the various docs to figure out the tweakings to our taste. Regards, Senthil

Setting the path in after installing mediawiki
by Senthil_OR@Dell.com
Hello Mediawiki Group, I must admit that, I am a relative newbie to LAMP itself. I want to implement a local wiki using a wikimedia software. I have setup the apache server, configured PHP with Apache and MySQL daemon is also running. I downloaded the mediawiki software and installed it. BUT my problem is I am not sure, if I am giving the correct Path to various files. My Apache server interprets PHP files if they are located at /var/www/html (DocumentRoot "/var/www/html") I also noticed that myApache server interprets the PHP files, only if it is in .php format and does not read .phtml format.(AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .phtml is Set) What changes, should make in the LocalSettings.php and AdminSettings.php ? When I compile, I also get a warning stating that WARNING: register_globals is not on; MediaWiki currently relies on this option. If I compile without any changes to the LocalSettings and AdminSettings and Link /usr/local/apache/htdocs/wiki/wiki.phtml to index.php (in my DocumentRoot folder) , then my PHP is not being properly interpreted. This is far from using
http://www.myhost.com/wiki/wiki.phtml
to view the file. ( This is not at all getting recognized) What steps should I follow the setup the correct path in the setings. Which paths need to be setup to what? Kindly help me. Thank you. Regards, Senthil My system configuration is: 1) Redhat Linux 3.0 Enterprise 2) Apache 2.0 3) PHP 4.3.2 ent 4) MySQL 3.23 5) Downloaded the latest stable version of mediawiki.

Maybe you can post the problem you had here or the wikitech list. There is a 4th option though besides shared hosting, dedicated hosting, and using your DSL line. You can run your own "virtual" linux box for around $20/month using User-Mode Linux (UML), but you'd need to know or learn about linux system administration. See this page:
http://holton.ltc.vanderbilt.edu/wiki/UserModeLinux
I'm using UML hosting to move my wiki and set up other wikis too. I'm hoping to switch to the MediaWiki engine if the memory & processor requirements aren't too steep. -Doug

Math renderings on new installation
by Fred Bauder
I've been trying to get mediawiki-1.1.0 to work. This time make math did work and I get some math functions, but incomplete ones, see:
http://dev.internet-encyclopedia.org/wiki/wiki.phtml?title=Trigonometry
By logging in and selecting HTML preferences you can get that part of it to work but not PNG or the modern browsers selection. These are the LocalSettings.php I have made on math. $wgMathPath = "{$wgServer}/math"; $wgMathDirectory = "/public/html/colorado/math"; Any ideas? Fred

Uploads Disabled
by Richards,Michael
Yesterday I downloaded MediaWiki 1.1.0 and updated our 20030829 version. Kudos to the development team and especially Brion for merging all the development branches into a stable version! Everything went smoothly and all functionality works fine (and looks good) except for one: When I click on Upload file it displays <uploaddisabled>. I have searched through the archives (wikitech-l.mbox and mediawiki-l.mbox) and couldn't find any references as to where the setting is to enable uploads. I have looked through LocalSettings.php and DefaultSettings.php and even Language.php and can't find the right variable. Maybe I'm just blind. All the images that are uploaded already are displaying fine, I just can't upload any more. So where is the setting to enable uploads? Or is it not that simple? And if it is just a setting, is there a reason why it defaults to off? Thanks, Michael Richards (Nanobug) PS Installation is Red Hat Linux, Apache 2.0.48, MySQL 11.18, PHP 4.3.3

Register Globals
by Fred Bauder
When I run install.php on ibilio with the new release MediaWiki-1.1.0 I get the Warning message: WARNING: register_globals is not on; MediaWiki currently relies on this option. Is this in fact true? I don't think I have access on Ibiblio to php.ini on Ibiblio. Or was this patch added? >This is a patch for one of the tasks on Brion's todo >list he sent some days ago. Currently, MediaWiki >requires the setting of > register_globals = On >in php.ini, which causes some trouble for people >trying to install MediaWiki and which might cause >some security problems. >Regards, >JeLuF If I need the patch and it works, Where would it go and could someone send it to me. I might be able to be ibiblio to change it but probably not if it affects all ibiblio accounts. Fred
