アラバマ州バ?ミングハム ^[1]^[2]^[3]またはケンタッキ?州ルイビル生まれ ^[4]^[5]^[6]。ドラマ? としてミュ?ジシャンとしてのキャリアを始めた。ヴィブラフォンとの出?いは 1930年にルイ?ア?ムストロングのレコ?ディングに?加したとき。スタジオに置いてあったヴィブラフォンを?いてみるようにア?ムストロングから言われたのがきっかけという。

1936年、ハンプトンはヴィブラフォン奏者としてベニ??グッドマンのバンドに?加する。これはジャズ?器としてのヴィブラフォンの存在を?く知らしめただけでなく、人種の壁が厚かった時代に白人の人?バンドに?人のミュ?ジシャンが?加したという点でも?期的な出?事であった。

その後もハンプトンは自身のリ?ダ?バンドを率いて精力的に活動し、ジャズ? ヴィブラフォンの第一人者としての地位を確立。バンドからは多?の有名ジャズ?ミュ?ジシャンを輩出した。またボ?カリストとしても明るいエンタ?テイナ?ぶりを?揮して人?を博した。 1995年に心??作で倒れライブ活動を引退。 2002年 8月、94?で逝去。
