カリフォルニア州 メンロ?パ?ク 出身。幼時より非西洋音?に親しむ。 1914年 より カリフォルニア大? で チャ?ルズ?シ?ガ? に作曲を?ぶ。 1931年 より ベルリン で 音?民族? を エ?リヒ?フォン?ホルンボステル に?び、 テヘラン や チェンナイ などアジアへの?究旅行を行った。後に ニュ?ヨ?ク の コロンビア大? の?授となった。弟子には ジョン?ケ?ジ 、 ル??ハリソン 、 ジョ?ジ?ガ?シュウィン 、 唯是震一 らがいる。また「ニュ??ミュ?ジック?エディション」の編集者兼?行人として新しいアメリカ音?の紹介に努めた。

初期には ト?ン?クラスタ? の??を行い、 1931年 、ロシア人 レフ?テルミン と共同で「リズミコン」という?器を製作している。 チャ?ルズ?アイヴズ 、 カ?ル?ラッグルズ 、 ジョン?J?ベッカ? 、 ウォリングフォ?ド?リ?ガ? とともにアヴァンギャルドなグル?プと位置づけられ、 アメリカ5人組 と呼ばれた。

作品は19曲の 交響曲 、2つの琴のための協奏曲、打?器協奏曲、アコ?ディオン協奏曲、 室??曲 、合唱曲、 歌曲 など1000曲近くに上る。そのかたわら「新しい音?の源泉」などの著作も?し、後進に大きな影響を?えた。

エピソ?ド [ 編集 ]

• 1936年 、年?の離れた若い男性に手を出して逮捕。懲役四年の判決が下るが、 刑務所 ?でバンドを結成しそのための音?を作曲したことで話題となった。
• 1957年 、 日本 を訪れており、 雅? の印象を元に「ONGAKU」を作曲している。
