三文字頭字語

三文字頭字語 （さんもじとうじご、three-letter acronym）または 三文字略語 （さんもじりゃくご、three-letter abbreviation）、略して TLA は、（主としてラテンアルファベット）3文字からなる頭字語である。これらは通常、複合語を構成する各?語の頭文字だけを?べたもので、全て大文字で書かれる。"TLA"という語自?も三文字頭字語である（自己整合語）。

ほとんどの三文字頭字語は、一字ずつアルファベットの名のままで?む（イニシャリズム）。例えば、 United States of America の略語"USA"は、「ユ?サ」「ウサ」ではなく「ユ?エスエイ」と?音する。一部の三文字頭字語は、通常の?語と同じように?音する。例えば、computer-aided designの略語" CAD "は「キャド」と?音する。

?史と起源

文?における” three-letter acronym ”というフレ?ズの初出は、1975年である ^[1]。TLAは生物?のニ?モニックとして用いられ ^[2]、その?用的な利点は1982年にウェ?バ?によって紹介された ^[3]。他にも多くの分野で使用されているが、特にコンピュ?タ?連でよく使われている ^[4]?。コンピュ?タ分野におけるTLAの生成について、1982年の JPL の報告で言及されている ^[5]。

1980年には、シンクレア ZX81 ホ?ムコンピュ?タのマニュアルにTLAが使用されていた ^[6]。1988年の、「本?にコンピュ?タサイエンスを?えることの?虐性について」（On the cruelty of really teaching computer science）と題する論文で、著名なコンピュ?タ科?者エドガ??ダイクストラは、「今日、TLAなしではいかなる努力も尊重されないので……」と書いた ^[7]。1992年までに、マイクロソフトのハンドブックに?められていた ^[8]。

TLAの使用は、産業と?術の?方で普及し、今日では一般的に理解されている。

組み合わせ

AからZまでのアルファベットの26文字を使用して作成し得るTLA（AAA, AAB, ...ZZY,ZZZ）の?は、26×26×26 = 17,576個である。3文字目に0?9の?字を使うことができれば、26×26×10 = 6760個?えて合計24,336個となる。?

英語では、 WWW は ?音すると最長となるTLAであり、一般的には9つの音節が必要となる。TLAの有用性は、表現するフレ?ズをより短かく言うことができることであるが、"WWW"は略す前の"World Wide Web"の3倍の音節を必要とする。そのため、"WWW"は時折"dubdubdub"（ダブダブダブ）のように?音される ^[9]。
