  • Seoul’s bus routes are classified into 5 types according to its operational characteristics.

  • Buses are given a 2 to 4-digit bus number classified by departure and destination.

  • Fare system
  • – Bus only (single-ride): Single-fare system
  • – Transfer: Base fare (up to 10 km) + \100 for every 5 km
  • – The higher base fare among the serviced modes of transport will be applied as transfer charges
  • Transfer rules
  • – The card must be tapped when getting off
  • – Must board within 30 min. of getting off to transfer
  • (Within 60 min. from 9 PM to 7 AM next day)
  • – Transfers are accepted up to 4 times (5 boardings)
  • – Multi-passenger transfer
  • * Only accepted if the boarding, get-off location, and number of passengers are the same
  • * Subway transfers are not allowed

  • * Same-vehicle and same-route transfers are not applied

How to use city buses

Payment methods

1. Prepaid transportation card
Type: Tmoney, Cashbee, Hanpay, Rail+, Onepass, etc.
Vendors: Convenience stores and bus card charging stations nationwide

2. Deferred transportation card
Type: Credit/debit card, etc.
Vendors: Credit card companies and banks

3. Cash

Free ride passengers

Infants and toddlers
Three infants and toddlers under age 6 accompanied by their adult guardian (more than three infants/toddlers or an infant/toddler boarding alone are subject to children fare)
Transfer tips

  1. Tap your card on the card reader when getting off
  2. The minimum transfer amount is \250
  3. Transfer within 30 min of tapping after getting off (within 1 hr from 9 AM to 7 AM next day)
  4. You can transfer up to 4 times (free transfers up to the 5th ride)
  5. Transfers are not accepted on the same bus/route (base fare when re-boarding)
Multi-passenger boarding/transferring

  1. Only applied when the number of passengers boarding or transferring is the same
  2. Subway transfer discount is not applied to multi-passenger boarding
  3. When boarding, tell the driver the number of passengers in advance
  4. When transferring, tell the initial number of passengers to get the transfer discount

  • Tolls, etc.: the actual amount is collected when passing through a toll at the passenger’s request
  • 20% surcharge is automatically applied when driving in areas outside city limits (Gwangmyeong Integrated Business Area and Joint Business Areas, incl. Wirye New Town) after leaving the city limits (Incheon Joint Business Area has different standards, so call 02-2133-2317 for inquiries)
  • Surcharge for late-night rides outside city limits: extra surcharge is applied when driving in areas outside city limits from 10 PM to 4 AM (up to 60%)
  • All taxis must charge only by the meter; violators are subject to administrative disposition as unfair charge (however, a separate fare plan approved by the Seoul Metropolitan Government can be charged without a meter)
  • Brand and large passenger taxis: operators can set standards and report fares by the self-reporting rate plan; discounts and surcharges can be applied based on the reported fares (report in advance) according to supply and demand
