In 1972, he graduated from Tartu 5th Secondary School. In 1977, he graduated from
University of Tartu
with a degree in biology. In 1990, he obtained a candidate degree in biology from the Zoology Institute in Leningrad. In 1999, he received a master's degree in geoinformatics and cartography from the
University of Tartu
.

Career

From 1977 to 1993, he worked at the Academy of Sciences
Institute of Zoology and Botany
as an engineer and junior researcher. From 1993 to 1998, he worked as an engineer at the Estonian Map Centre, and from 1998 to 1999, he worked as the chief specialist of the cartography office at the Land Board. Since 1998, he has been a researcher at the Faculty of Biology and Geography of the University of Tartu, and since 2002, a researcher in geoinformatics and cartography at the Institute of Ecology and Earth Sciences at the University of Tartu, becoming a senior researcher in 2005.
Sports

He has won 4 gold medals (1979 in individual, 1975, 1981, and 1983 in relay), 1 silver medal, and 1 bronze medal at the Estonian Orienteering Championships. In Estonian Athletics Championships, he won bronze in the 30 km road race in 1983 and bronze in the marathon in 1985.

He has been part of the University of Tartu team that has won the Jurioojooks competition five times.
Research

He has published over 50 scientific publications. Since 2011, he has been a member of the International Society for Computational Ecology.
Cartography

He has compiled over 70 orienteering maps,

as well as various tourist maps, city plans, and other maps.

His father was Hans Remm and his mother is Eevi Remm. Maido Remm is his brother.
