Thank you for vectorizing many Japanese Municipal flags, some have come in handy for a project that I am working on (that relies on svg flags).

Hello, I have seen your contributions to the Japanese municipal flags project, and have also seen you talk about it, so I was wondering if there was a link to a Wiki project for it?
Thank you.

I find the flags that still need a vector version via this page (which gets updated weekly by a bot):
Top 200 symbol of municipalities in Japan images that should use vector graphics
and this category:

(this one gets updated in real-time).

I went to the source file and took a screenshot of this frame at the highest resolution, but it didn't change the quality of the image. So unless a higher-resolution source file can be found, this is as good as it gets.

Greetings! Thank you so much for uploading SVG versions of the missing images. Some of the signs have changed design though, with the latest standard being
File:GB 5768.2-2022.pdf
.

- Hi
@
Fry1989
:
I appreciate the heads up and the work you did. Looking at the pdf it appears the signs use a different color than the one I got from the source images. Would this mean all the files in
Category:SVG warning road signs of China
need updating, not just the ones with updated icons? (I don't mind doing this, but I want to make sure I get this right so I don't end up frustrating you or giving you more work needlessly in the process.)
- I also appreciate the up-to-date source file on the Chinese road signs, there's a number of other signs I wanted to work on that appear to have outdated source images.

- No problem. I'm glad we can work together.
- In regards to which symbols have been re-designed and which have not, it is a bit tricky. There's very obvious changes like
File:China road sign 警 33.svg
where the symbol was flipped around in the 2022 revision, but some of the others require a very close eye to notice the differences. It does not help that the 2022 standard is the only one with actual construction sheets for each sign included (starting on page 236). To be honest, I wonder if I am being too discriminating. For example, the gaps in the windsock on
File:China road sign 警 16.svg
appear to have been made larger on the 2022 version. The shape of the smoke on
File:China road sign 警 29.svg
appears to have changed as well. Are these just superficial differences, or were the symbols actually re-designed? I don't know because the 2009 version does not have construction sheets to compare with. Perhaps you can advise me of your opinion. I can list each sign individually that appears to have been changed in some way, and you can let me know what you think.
- As for the colour, real life examples do appear to show a darker yellow in use. If you would like to use the 2022 booklet as the colour palette, you are welcome to do so.

My personal preference would be to just re-do the whole set, especially considering we have a really good reference for these signs. The older designs that were uploaded previously aren't
wrong
so much as outdated, so for those I would prefer the files to be renamed and moved to the Historical signs subcat rather than overwritten, also freeing up their original filenames. Would you be alright with this, or would this be too drastic?

- If you have the time to spare to re-do them all, that would be great. The overwrite point you raise, I am not certain I understand. Do you mean you wish to upload
every
sign as a completely new file? I'm not sure that is necessary for signs that have not changed. For example, were it me, I would simply overwrite
File:CN road sign 警 17.svg
with my improvements to the drawing. Or am I misunderstanding your intentions?
- With the file names, I am in the process of moving those signs which have not changed from "China road sign X 00" to "CN road sign X 00", since many of the signs were re-numbered. This also follows the naming convention for several other countries such as Russia and Ukraine, and uses the ISO country code. This way, you can upload the missing signs without the need for us to do any renaming, we can simply leave the older versions under their old name. This is what I did with
File:China road sign 警 33.svg
, leaving it under that old name and uploading the new sign under the new name
File:CN road sign 警 12-1.svg
. Does that make sense?
- One other point I would like to raise. Since we have the actual dimensions for
File:China road sign blank.svg
, with your permission, I would like to re-draw it to those dimensions. This is how I create my files, such as
File:CL road sign RPI-1.svg
, with 1 pixel = 1 millimetre. What are your thoughts?

The reason I'm thinking of uploading new files instead of overwriting the current ones is so we have two versions of the signs, the old/historic ones and the current ones. That way we could have two complete sets instead of having "gaps" where old signs were overwritten instead of renamed. Even if the old signs' symbols haven't changed, the color would still be different.
- I also don't think a new version of the signs I've uploaded is needed. The size of SVG files isn't calculated in pixels, upscaling or downscaling them doesn't really change anything about the quality or the resolution itself. Though I will keep the 1 pixel = 1 mm thing in mind for the future.

- I see. That is not how I would do it, but if that is how you really wish to do it, I can move them back to their old names without a redirect. In the meantime, I have made some alterations that may interest you. I have redrawn the triangle according to the dimensions on pages 17-18 and applied it to
File:China road sign 警 38.svg
and
File:CN road sign 警 36.svg
. This way of creating the signs is more relevant when there are construction sheets for the symbols that display the actual dimensions, such as
the manual from Chile
. Since the Chinese manual does not have construction sheets for the symbols with actual dimensions, but instead just a basic grid, it's not really possible to make the symbols exactly accurate anyway. So I understand your viewpoint that it is an unnecessary step. You will also notice that I have greatly improved the symbol on those two files. I was able to do so thanks to the working version of the standard,
GB 5768.2-XXXX
. It has a handful of signs in the vector format, although most are not. Let me know your thoughts.

- If you would like to continue uploading new versions of the signs, you can certainly do so. However, there is one minor issue. If I move
File:CN road sign 警 1-1.svg
back to "China road sign 警 1a.svg" without a redirect freeing up the namespace "CN road sign 警 1-1.svg", but there is no new file to fill that namespace, there are bots that start removing it from projects because it is as if no such file exists. This would be disruptive to the projects. For that reason, I would recommend you upload your version under some meaningless temporary name like "Temp file 57.svg". Once you do so, I can move the older version back to "China road sign 警 1a.svg" and then move "Temp file 57.svg" to "CN road sign 警 1-1.svg" right after. That will provide seamless replacement without the bots getting in the way.

Gifting you the PowerMac G5 for your help!
|
Thank you User:ReneeWrites for helping me by vectorizing most of
Category:Symbol of municipalities in Japan images that should use vector graphics
you can, and extremely sorry for harrassing you and other WikiComms users when I was desperate to get my job done.
The fact you shifted your focus away from
my working category
made me worry and you left me all alone doing all the things I'm doing in
that category I'm working on
without any warning. But, you're not alone. I know you're engaged in other things, and so do the others. So, I think I shouldn't blame you for that.
Now, I need your company, so that we would contribute together, as I learned my lessons from you. Don't you mind clearing
the category I made for replacing old flags and emblems I've got with their vector versions
? That got 62 files and counting, and I wanted to clear it. So, I need you to do that. I would like you to tell me your opinions about it.
Thank you for helping me, and apologies for my stupid mistakes I made to you. I hope you're doing better, and please let me know what you think about my PowerMac?:). See you in a bit.

Does this also mean keeping the categories on them intact? Because the issue was that someone had created a huge amount of categories that were part of very elaborate category tree structures that were often self-referential, but contained no or very little media. I wanted it to be clear that these categories were empty.

- Yes, I understand that it is tricky, and if that was occurring, then a note in the deletion request would have been helpful. you need to understand that I was having to start somewhere in what I was being asked to speedy delete, and there was no breadcrumbs or indicators of what was occurring. So, preferably for such a large cleanup with that body of research by you, there should be a deletion discussion where we can drop a good list of what we have seen and what we are cleaning up, then reference that list in the deletion request. All of this allows us to show our workings, either immediately for someone to follow our work, or for a future time when someone may just need to unpick the story when someone comes up with the "brilliant" idea next time. We are trying to indicate that we are working to a consensus, either in an individual conversation or based on the principles that are explained by our policies. ??

The discussions were happening at the village pump and at CfD, and there was a consensus at both. I indeed didn't start a deletion request, but the page for that indicated CfD was the right avenue for that when it comes to categories. Regardless, I really appreciate the help with cleaning these up, and I'll make sure to tag them appropriately next time.
