in 1861. Considered the first durable colour photographic image, and the very first made by the three-colour method Maxwell first suggested in 1855. Maxwell had the photographer Thomas Sutton photograph a tartan ribbon three times, each time with a different colour filter (red, green, or blue-violet) over the lens. The three photographs were developed, printed on glass, then projected onto a screen with three different projectors, each equipped with the same colour filter used to photograph it. When superimposed on the screen, the three images formed a full-colour image. Maxwell's three-colour approach underlies nearly all forms of colour photography, whether film-based, analogue video, or digital. The three photographic plates now reside in a small museum at 14 India Street, Edinburgh, the house where Maxwell was born.

en 1861. On la considere comme etant la premiere image photographique sur support durable, et la toute premiere faite avec la methode des trois couleurs que Maxwell suggera des 1855. Maxwell fit photographier trois fois un ruban de tartan par le photographe Thomas Sutton, avec un filtre de couleur different (rouge, vert, puis bleu-violet) a chaque fois. Les trois photographies furent developpees, imprimees sur verre, puis projetees sur un ecran a l'aide de trois projecteurs differents, chacun equipe du meme filtre de couleur utilise pour realiser la photographie. En se superposant a l'ecran, les trois images forment une image en couleur. L'approche de Maxwelle, basee sur trois couleurs de base, est restee la base de quasiment toutes les formes de photographie en couleur, que ce soit sur un support de type film, une video analogique, ou numerique. Les trois plaques photographiques demeurent actuellement dans un petit museum situe a Edinbourg, au 14 India Street, la maison natale de Maxwell.
