Scotland are out of? Euro 2024 after losing to Hungary in their final group game.

Scotland, who had never qualified for the knockout stages of a major tournament, knew that they would be within striking distance of history with victory over the Hungarians, given the possibility of qualifying as one of the four best-third placed teams from across the groups.

But Kevin Csoboth’s 100th-minute winner sealed their fate, leaving the Scots on just one point from their three Group A matches.

What Scotland needed to do to qualify from Euro 2024 group

Scotland realistically needed to beat Hungary to keep their Euro 2024 hopes alive. While the prospect of qualifying top of Group A had gone, three points against Hungary would still have put the Scots in a strong position.

Their chances of taking the runners-up spot in Group A were slim and would have also required Germany to beat Switzerland and a seven-goal swing in goal difference in their favour, which did not happen, with the two other teams playing out a draw.

Scotland’s most likely qualifying route was, therefore, as one of the top-ranked third-placed teams in the competition, with a tally of four points (their draw with Switzerland and a victory over Hungary) likely to have been enough.

However a failure to register a shot on target all game against Hungary, and also being denied a strong penalty claim, cost the Scots on Sunday night, as did ultimately Csoboth’s late winner.
