n a worthy tribute for this special occasion, we are honoring one of the longest serving Deans of this Cathedral, and one of the most respected clergymen of our Sacred Archdiocese, the learned Protopresbyter Robert (Haralambos) Stephanopoulos. And we are honoring as well the memory of his incomparable Presvytera, Nikki Stephanopoulos, whose falling asleep in the Lord last year marked an era in the life of our Church. Presvytera’s communications skills and contacts were legendary, and her contributions to the Archdiocese and our Patriarchate were inestimable.

It is such a pleasure to be within the hallowed precincts of the American School of Classical Studies, which has offered so much to Greece and to the world throughout its long and storied history. The Stoa of Attalos, in which we gathered yesterday for the opening of this all-important Conference, is a gift of the American School to the People of Greece. The excavations of the Ancient Agora, and the seemingly numberless sites around Greece where scholars and students ply their archaeological craft, are an extraordinary boon to this country. And standing here, connected to the only library Andrew Carnegie built outside of the United States ? is the famed Gennadius Library.

I can think of not greater honor than to stand here and represent the Mother Church as Patriarchal Representative, and no greater friend to respond to with love and respect, than Ambassador George J. Tsunis. For the Ambassador is much more than a distinguished Greek-American with a record of tremendous success in every endeavor he has engaged. He is more than a political figure, who has given a commitment to democratic values and institutions equal to a battlefield soldier. He is more than a figure of decency, morality, values, and above all faith and family.
