Raleigh, North Carolina

USA / North Carolina / Raleigh /
city , capital city of state/province/region , county seat

Capital city of North Carolina, with an estimated population of 392,552 in 2008. Also the seat of Wake County. Chosen as the site of the new state capital in 1788, the city was officially established in 1792 and named for Sir Walter Raleigh, sponsor of the lost colony of Roanoke and a leading figure in the history of North Carolina. Birthplace of President Andrew Johnson.

Raleigh was surveyed to be the capital of the State of North Carolina. The town layout design is best seen in the area around the State Capitol Building. There is a north/south axis from the legislative buildings to the north through the State Capitol through downtown to the performing arts complex at the south. The State Capitol is also the center of a square with parks filling the blocks at each corner. The Governor's Mansion is in the northeast; Moore Square is in the southeast; Nash Square is in the southwest. The fourth park block was used for the NC School of the Blind, breaking the symmetry.
