Rangers manager Walter Smith expressed disappointment at both of the red cards brandished during his side's 2-1 victory over Aberdeen at Ibrox.

Charlie Mulgrew was dismissed for an alleged head-butt on Kyle Lafferty before Rangers Madjid Bougherra saw red for a challenge on Jamie Langfield.

Smith said: "I didn't think there was any great contact (by Charlie Mulgrew).

"With the second one, I just think it's absolutely incredible that they've sent the player off."

Smith was also upset by the antics of Lafferty, who clutched his face after the off-the-ball incident with Mulgrew.

"I was disappointed in my own player's reaction to that," Smith told BBC Scotland.

"I didn't think the player made any great contact with him at all and there was no necessity for that reaction.

"If it is as the first viewing showed, then I'll have a word with them."

The Scottish Football Association will take action against Lafferty over his apparent simulation.

The SFA will invoke the same Uefa rule that led to Saulius Mikoliunas being punished for simulation in Lithuania's game against Scotland.

Whatever the punishment, it will not take effect until next season, so Lafferty will be available for Rangers' final league match at Tannadice.

Regarding the tackle made by Bougherra, assistant referee Graham Chambers advised referee Stuart Dougal in the run-up to him showing the red card, which angered the Rangers boss.

"He (Bougherra) had every right to go for the ball and Jamie Langfield was brave in going in for it along with him.

"(Bougherra's) tried to get the ball. The linesman has said to me that he's deliberately kicked the goalkeeper in the head which I find absolutely incredible.

"If linesmen were that good, they should be referees and they shouldn't be making decisions like that.

"If we can (appeal) then obviously we will do but we've been told last week that the panel that reviews doesn't meet till next season so that doesn't really help us any, unless it's a different process that they have to go through."
