1660年 大 英國人들이 뉴저지를 차지하기 前에는, 現在의 트렌턴 地域에 델라웨어 族 인디언이 살고 있었다. 植民地 時節에는 뉴욕 과 필라델피아 사이의 旅程을 잇는 據點이었다. 美國 獨立 戰爭 中에는 1776年 12月 , 조지 워싱턴 이 트렌턴 近處의 델라웨어 江 을 건넜으며, 그 後에 일어난 戰鬪에서 英國軍에게 雇用된 獨逸 의 職業 軍隊 헤센 君을 물리쳤다.

1784年 11月 부터 12月 까지 美國의 首都였다. 1790年 에 뉴저지 州의 州都가 되었고, 1792年 都市로 繁榮하였다. 1800年 代에 와서 트렌턴은 貿易과 産業의 中心地로 發達하였다. 鐵道 가 함께 놓이면서, 江 交通 이 發達하여 都市의 産業을 빠르게 繁昌시켰다. 數千名의 工場 勤勞者들이 트렌턴으로 移住하면서, 1880年 부터 1920年 까지 人口가 約 90,000名으로 늘어났다. 1920年 에 와서 陶藝 의 中心地로 發達하였다. 그 後에는 많은 住民들과 큰 企業들이 外郭으로 빠져나갔다. 그러다가 人口가 折半으로 줄어들었는데, 1970年 代와 1980年 代 사이에 州政府가 트렌텐에 수많은 建物들을 세웠다.
