Granth Sahib anniversary celebration features melodious concert by Snatam Kaur

There have been many memorable performances by musicians from India and US, but Snatam Kaur’s concert at the Hobby Center on Saturday, Feb 5, was a rare musical treat.

Snatam Kaur is building beautiful bridges between East and West. The occasion was “Celebrations of 400th Anniversary of Compilation and Installation of Adi Granth Sahib, The Sikh Holy Scripture. Sikhism is fifth largest revealed religion that is over 500 years old. Guru Granth Sahib has been declared by UNESCO as “The Heritage of Mankind” and its first English translation was sponsored by UNESCO.

Houston mayor Bill White was present in appreciation of the cultural diversity and enrichment of Houston’s religious fabric. He presented the event proclamation recognizing the 400th anniversary celebrations of the Sikh holy scripture to Hardeep K. Singh, Jasbir Singh Sethi and Jasbir Singh.

He also recognized the unique musical talent of Snatam Kaur and her contribution to enriching contemporary musical arts. White bestowed honorary citizenship of the City of Houston on Snatam and appointed her a Goodwill Ambassador to the world.

The concert was sponsored by Gurbani Veechar (a one-hour weekly radio program). The idea was to bring the universal message of Guru Granth Sahib ? “Love, Equality and Peace with dignity” ? to the mainstream. Snatam has spent years in India, particularly Amritsar, learning the Gurmat Sangeet from master practitioners.

Snatam Kaur is a rising star in the firmament of contemporary female devotional vocalists. She is a Grammy Award” nominee. With her crystal clear and rapturous voice, she virtually transported the hall full of audience, into the realm of heart and spirit, an unforgettable experience indeed.
