Taxpayer Advocate Service Position Descriptions

Secretary

As a? Secretary , you will provide support to advocates and managers who are helping taxpayers. These taxpayers may be facing hardships, have run into language or cultural barriers, or have simply tried everything they know to resolve their problems. You will work with people throughout the IRS and your peers across the country, as well as helping with outreach events in your local area. You will get regular training and be encouraged to explore opportunities.

 

Intake Advocate

As an? Intake Advocate or Intake Advocate (Bilingual-Spanish) , you are the first person representing the Taxpayer Advocate Service that a taxpayer encounter. Intake Advocates are important to our mission in TAS to solve the problems of the taxpayers who come to us for assistance.? You will provide administrative and technical assistance to individuals and/or business that involve a wide range of issues/problems. Your initial conversation and actions set the groundwork for advocacy and the tone for future interactions with TAS employees.

Lead Intake Advocate

As a? Lead Intake Advocate , you serve as a work leader over Intake Advocates providing administrative and technical assistance to individuals and/or business that involve a wide range of issues/problems.

Case Advocate

As a? Case Advocate or Case Advocate (Bilingual-Spanish) , you will have the chance to make a real difference in someone’s life, every day. Case Advocates work with people who are facing hardships; who can’t provide necessities like housing, transportation or food: who have run into language or cultural barriers; or have simply tried everything they know to resolve their tax problems.

 

 

Lead Case Advocate

As a? Lead Case Advocate , you will serve as a team leader and provide leadership to a team of Case Advocates. You will aid taxpayers in the most complex technical and procedural tax cases.

 

Analyst

As an? Analyst , you will use your analytical and technical skills to conduct in-depth analyses of project data, requirements, and impact and you will identify problem areas and determine how to resolve them. You will be the lead Taxpayer Advocate Service Representative on cross-functional projects. You will also have a chance to spot tax problems when they first appear and help stop them from spreading nationwide.

Local Taxpayer Advocate

As a? Local Taxpayer Advocate , you will lead a team of trained, highly dedicated employees in solving tax problems, easing the taxpayers’ burden and frustration, and protecting their rights in dealing with the IRS. You will use and strengthen your management skills as a frontline manager in a small office, or a senior manager in a larger one, and will have opportunities for leadership training and advancement.

Legal Tax Advisor

As a Legal Tax Advisor to the National Taxpayer Advocate (NTA), you will provide independent legal advice and guidance to the NTA on a wide variety of tax issues. You will identify, research, and write about systemic tax issues for the NTA’s annual reports to Congress.

You will also identify, research, and write legislative proposals to change the tax code and propose administrative changes to IRS procedures to make the tax system fairer and more equitable. Further, as a Legal Tax Advisor, you will research and write Taxpayer Advocate Directives (TADs) as well as write blogs about tax issues. You will advise TAS personnel about novel case advocacy issues and assist in drafting Taxpayer Assistance Orders.

Overall, as a Legal Tax Advisor, you will have the opportunity to improve the tax system for individual taxpayers and on a systemic level.

TAS offers comprehensive training.

Throughout the first year of employment, new hires will receive a combination of formal classroom training, on-the-job instruction and workshops. Receive extensive training in TAS procedures, technology and data systems, and everything else that you’ll need to know to help taxpayers. TAS employees also attend an annual week-long training event that gives everyone a chance to learn new things and to network.
