Overview of HDMI 2.0
What is the testing policy for HDMI 2.0 products?
An Adopter's first product in a designated product category that implements any function of the HDMI 2.0 specification needs to be submitted to an ATC for testing and pass all applicable and available HDMI compliance tests before shipment.
An Adopter's subsequent product in a designated product category that implements any additional function of the HDMI 2.0 specification should be submitted to an ATC for testing and pass all applicable and available HDMI compliance tests before shipment.
Can existing HDMI cables support the higher bandwidths of HDMI 2.0 Specification?
Yes, existing High Speed HDMI Cables (wire only) will support the new higher bandwidths (up to 18Gbps).
HDMI 2.0 specification defined a new, more efficient signaling method, for speeds above 1.4b limits (10.2Gbps), to allow higher bandwidths (up to 18Gbps) over existing High Speed HDMI Wire Cables.
Does HDMI 2.0 support BT.2020 (rec.2020) colorimetry?
Yes. HDMI 2.0 includes support for BT.2020 Colorimetry with 10 or more bits of color depth.
Video Formats defined in BT.2020 and supported by HDMI 2.0 specification:
– 2160p, 10/12 bits, 24/25/30Hz, RGB/4:2:2/4:4:4

What is HDMI 2.0?
HDMI 2.0, which is backwards compatible with earlier versions of the HDMI specification, significantly increases bandwidth up to 18Gbps and adds key enhancements to support market requirements for enhancing the consumer video and audio experience.
What’s new in HDMI 2.0?
HDMI 2.0 significantly increases bandwidth to 18Gbps and includes the following advanced features:
- Resolutions up to 4K@50/60 (2160p), which is 4 times the clarity of 1080p/60 video resolution, for the ultimate video experience
- Up to 32 audio channels for a multi-dimensional immersive audio experience
- Up to 1536kHz audio sample frequency for the highest audio fidelity
- Simultaneous delivery of dual video streams to multiple users on the same screen
- Simultaneous delivery of multi-stream audio to multiple users (Up to 4)
- Support for the wide angle theatrical 21:9 video aspect ratio
- Dynamic synchronization of video and audio streams
- CEC extensions provide more expanded command and control of consumer electronics devices through a single control point
Does HDMI 2.0 replace HDMI 1.x?
No, HDMI 2.0 is built on top of HDMI 1.x and any device that wants to implement HDMI 2.0 must first implement HDMI 1.x as a baseline requirement.
Is HDMI 2.0 backwards compatible with HDMI 1.x?
Yes, all HDMI versions are fully backward compatible with all previous versions.
Does HDMI 2.0 require new connectors?
No, HDMI 2.0 uses the existing connectors.
Does HDMI 2.0 require new cables?
No, HDMI 2.0 features will work with existing HDMI cables. Higher bandwidth features, such as 4K@50/60 (2160p) video formats, will require existing High Speed HDMI cables (Category 2 cables).
Can my existing HDMI 1.x devices be upgraded with HDMI 2.0 features?
Currently, there are no provisions for doing such an upgrade. Because of the new enhanced feature set, any such conversion would require hardware and/or firmware upgrades. If there are such conversions, it would come from the manufacturer. Please check with them directly.
When will ATCs start to provide 2.0 testing services?
Each individual ATC will decide on when to offer HDMI 2.0 testing services. Please contact your local ATC for more information.
What are the testing requirements for HDMI 2.0?
All HDMI 2.0 features must be compliance tested with the HDMI Compliance Test Specification (CTS) 2.0 and all HDMI 2.0 devices must also be compliant with the HDMI CTS 1.4b.
When will the HDMI 2.0 Compliance Test Specification be available?
The HDMI 2.0 Compliance Test Specification (CTS) is expected to be released before the end of 2013.

Can non-HDMI Adopters license only the HDMI 2.0 specification?
No. Any company seeking to develop HDMI-enabled products using the HDMI 2.0 specification must also license the HDMI 1.x specification.
If I am a current Adopter, do I have to license HDMI 2.0?
No, Adopters have the option to only license 1.x and are not required to sign the Adopter Addendum
Do HDMI 1.x Adopters automatically get access to HDMI 2.0?
No, existing HDMI Adopters must sign the new HDMI 2.0 addendum to license and access HDMI 2.0.
Is there a new licensing agreement for HDMI 2.0?
No, however there is a new HDMI 2.0 addendum to the existing HDMI 1.x Adopter Agreement.
Will current Adopters be required to pay an additional Annual Fee if they choose to adopt the HDMI 2.0 specification?
No. There is no additional Annual Fee for HDMI Adopters who choose to license the HDMI 2.0 specification.
Will there be any new royalty and/or increase in current royalties for products that implement HDMI 2.0 features?
No. HDMI Adopters will continue to pay the same royalties on HDMI 1.x products in accordance with the existing Adopter Agreement. There is no additional royalty for implementing the HDMI 2.0 specification.
Where can I download the HDMI 2.0 specification?
