Farewell to Landsat Collection 1
By Justin Braaten, Developer Relations Engineer, Google Earth Engine
Starting in the second half of 2024, Landsat Collection 1 (and Pre-Collection) datasets will no longer be available in the
Earth Engine Data Catalog
, and computed datasets like
32-day NDVI
will be generated from Collection 2. After
USGS stopped distribution of the data in 2021
, Earth Engine has maintained Collection 1 access to provide users sufficient time to migrate to Collection 2. Now that usage of Collection 1 is very low, we are preparing to remove it. Use the
Landsat Collection 1 to Collection 2 migration guide
to update your Earth Engine scripts, modules, and apps by July 1, 2024 to avoid failed requests, if you’ve not already switched to Collection 2.
If you have a use case that depends on Collection 1 or need more time to migrate to Collection 2, please post a message on the Earth Engine Developer Forum (
this group thread
) so that we can get in touch with you.
If you’re interested in learning about the rationale behind the Landsat collections processing model and the contents and advancements provided by Collection 2, see the article
“The 50-year Landsat collection 2 archive”
in Remote Sensing of Environment.
Landsat is an essential dataset for studying the past and present condition of Earth’s surface and we plan to continue supporting Collection 2 and any future iteration of the archive.
